LifeTime: Television for Dad

Not too long ago, I hung up the phone with mom. She called after watching last nights season finale of Army Wives with dad. She had watched it last night, but dad was working and didn't get to see it. If you are unfamiliar or haven't seen it yet, I won't ruin it, but I will say it ends with the typical over-dramatic plotline that is not only customary of Lifetime, but also of the show itself.

Apparently, during the airing, there were advertisments for one of the many the "What Happened to Diana" movies that they show depicting the various conspirarcies surrounding the death of Princess Di... as one would expect given the upcoming anniversary of her death next week.

And, as is customary to my father, he began to speculate... first on Army Wives, his speculation is that the entire cast is wiped out come the next season opener.... because THAT would make sense. Then it was onto what did happen to Diana?? I suspect his viewing of any movie concerning the late princess will be like the Titanic all over again, i.e. Why did they sink the boat and kill all those people?

I love my dad and his endearing hope that when they make a movie based on actual events, that they will be very loosely based and end happily ever after this time. And I have to admire that thought that if you could do it over, and tell the story another way, why not change what you didn't like?

Of course, it isn't as endearing when our administration does the same thing... but then, I digress.

Mahalo.

Lazy, rainy Sunday

There were so many good intentions gone awry today. I had planned to work for a good 3-4 hours... I lasted an hour. The rain put a damper on the gardening plans for the day and it all just went downhill from there.

I did manage to do some cooking; and in a last ditch effort to feel productive, I have gathered together the laundry, packed up a box of books and gathered together many of the items I will be donating to various organizations if I cannot find one to take it all.

Mostly, though, I'm just feeling run down and whiny. I did go to Bombadills this morning for a few hours and did get some writing done, and got several emails written I might not have otherwise. Today is the perfect day to kick back and watch a movie... and I would love to go see either Talk to Me or 10 Questions for the Dalai Lama... both of which are playing today, except that I know that the air conditioning would be more than I could handle. It's low 70s right now, and I'm already a bit chilled... can't image going into another establishment (a quick trip to Kroger for cilantro proved nearly fatal).

Decidedly, the best possible course of action is to sit on my ass in front of the TV the rest of the day and try to at least force liquids down, because aside from my three large cups of coffee at Bombadill's, I've managed to drink 2 whole glasses of water, and that was an effort that resulted in nausea. I guess, I'm afraid that if I sit down and stop moving around for more than 5 minutes and just relax, I will realize that I'm actually not feeling very good at all... and since I really don't like that, it is easier just to run around and find things to do. Though, admittedly, I don't think I can do that much longer either--one way or another, it finds a way to sneak up on you.

On that note, I'm certain a shower will be the corrective cure for what troubles me... indeed, why didn't I think of that earlier?! I'm sure if I had, typing would not have turned into such a painful event right about now.

Ciao...

Independence? Is that meant to be a joke?

A storm looms omniously today; hinting and powerful destruction and on what better a day? There would be nothing better to remind the people of this country how fiercely un-independent we have become than to have a storm hammer down its wind and hallow upon us.

I am fully aware that the preceeding statement are fighting words on such a patriotic of holiday. We have soldiers fighting abroad; my family among them... but I'm not sure most of us know why--or for what freedom?

Just a few questions that meander my mind as I see people today touting the flag and over-indulging on fatty food and filling their tanks. About 50 emails in the last few days with subject lines about God and Freedom and other such stuff--emails from people who really don't know me, or think I might change with just the right combinations of motivational messaging. People who never actually send me an email with any thought or personal sentiment--just forward and keep the machine churning. 1984 anyone?

It is predictable, to launch into a tirade of sorts on this prestigious of holidays... but all I have to say is if our supply of fossil fuel were suddenly to be cut off this country would fall in minutes. All I'm saying is that World Peace depends on the hangs on crude oil.

I can't help but be a little verbose, I've been flipping back through the Thompson, and I did watch Where the Buffalo Roam again this past weekend. Always nice to be surprised by the fact that Bill Murray can act from time to time; even if he hasn't done too much since 1980 to really prove that fact. I managed to also catch, finally, Oceans Thirteen yesterday after work. I loved it... a lot of homage is paid to Frank and the original as well as to the Godfather. And, I have to say, even if you don't know all the cast "in jokes" you don't miss the humor--that is the brilliance of the writing. In fact, if you do recognize the in jokes, it can be a tad distracting... but still quite humorous. I just have to note that I loved the ringtone Brad Pitt's character, Rusty, had during the movie: the midi of the Human League's "Don't you want me." Classic. And my favorite line (sheesh, to pick one?): "You're analog players in a digital world."
